The concept of individuality in a world of mass consumerism continues to fascinate. This exhibition explores individuality within a confined space

Bubble Wrap Textiles

Gail Hawes uses contemporary textile techniques and materials to explore individuality within a confined structure. For this innovative exhibition the confined structure was the bubble of bubble wrap, while seemingly small still allowed for a wide variety of techniques to be used.

In Japanese art, space assumed a dominant role and its position was strengthened by Zen concepts

Japanese Textiles

Over the recent centuries Japanese was influenced through trade and diplomacy by Asian nations renowned for their textiles.  Then the trickle of European influence prior to the 1850s burst into a flood after the opening of Japanese trading ports in 1854.

I like the fact that in ancient Chinese art, the great painters always included a deliberate flaw in their work;  human creation is never perfect.

Chinese Textiles

Silk is so intricately linked with the history of China, that it seems as tho this extraordinary fibre and China could not have existed without each other.  For centuries the highest quality of silk and embroidery has adorned the beautiful garments and palaces of the Chinese emperors and their families to distinguish them from those they ruled.

Without craftsmanship, inspiration is a mere reed shaken in the wind.

Tribal Textiles

The textile arts have been rural-bound treasures for centuries. No matter the country, state, or region, we find incredible examples of high craftsmanship tucked away in some of the most unexpected and remote places.

Soulful Stitches will offer a range of textiles from tribal regions throughout the world, particularly those featuring quality embroidery and woven techniques.  Whether from India, Indonesia or Africa, you will continue to find a variety on offer here.  To complement this, blogs will feature specific techniques or styles of textiles which very often have been developed by a group in isolation.

Handmade Lace

Lace is one of the most complicated of textile arts, to master.  Because much lace was made by piece work, young girls from the age of 6 were encouraged to begin to learn the skills by making small elements -  perhaps a simple braid, which could then be sold to support the family.  A lifetime of mastery then followed, creating the most intricate and beautiful patterns.

Soulful Stitches will be launching an online catalogue of laces for purchase by enthusiasts very soon.

When you buy something from an artist you’re buying more than an object. You’re buying hundreds of hours of errors and experimentation. You’re not buying just one thing, you’re buying a piece of a heart.
