Vintage Shibori Cotton bolt

Vintage Shibori Cotton bolt

The word ‘Shibori’ comes from the verb root shiboru, "to wring, squeeze, press.".  There are an infinite number of ways one can bind, stitch, fold, twist, or compress cloth for shibori, and each way results in very different patterns.

Nui is a technique that involves simply stitching the cloth and pulling the threads tight to gather the fabric. Wooden dowels are often used to pull the thread very tight and to secure it in place when dying. This technique allows the most accurate and variety of pattern to be achieved.

This length of fabric features abeautiful Nui gathered effect pattern, with subtle shades of light and dark.  In the current form the fabric is a gently gathered 11m piece.
